Roald Dahl was a British author of popular children’s literature and short stories. He has
been called one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century. One of his
famous works and my favourite book is ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. This is an amazing
and funny book. It is full of wonders, surprises, mischief and twists and turns.
The story goes like this. One day, George’s mother went for some shopping. George’s
grandmother was very cruel to him, so for the same, George wanted to teach her a lesson
and wanted to take revenge. George sat on a chair, thinking about what he could do when
his eyes fell upon a medicine grandma always took. Then he decided to make a new and
marvellous medicine to replace the real one.
He took a big saucepan and made a rule “Whatever was running powdery and gueey it
went in’. He then walked towards the bathroom and put his all sorts of things such as
golden gloss hair shampoo, face cream, Helga’s Harvest lipsticks, flea powder for dog
detergent, shoe polish, chilli powder, horse pills, pills for cows and sleep and pigs, engine
oil, antifreeze, grease, etc. Then he boiled it all. He added a little brown colour and left it to
cool down.
He picked up the medicine bottle and threw away the stuƯ inside. He filled the new mixture
took a spoon and went into the living room. When grandma drank it, she yelled ‘Oweeee’
and became so tall she crashed the roof. She wouldn’t believe how much the medicine did
to her. When the parents came home, they did not believe their eyes. The mother fainted,
but the father gave it all to the animals in the barn. After that, he kept the leftover medicine
in a corner. Grandma wanted to have all the attention towards her. Nobody was paying
attention, so she picked up the body and banged it.
That’s when she started becoming small again. First, she became her original size. Then no
bigger than a lemon, then a seed and then she was gone. Everyone was astonished, but by
lunchtime, even Mrs. Killy Kracker (George’s Mom) shouted. “Where is Mom? I’m happy she
is gone. She was my mother, but a pain in the neck.”
I like this book and have read it a number of times. If you also love fun and want to
laugh, do read this roller coaster book.
